Gretel begin painting in December 2019 after she saw a painting she loved but couldn't afford and so decided to paint one for herself. During  the Australian Bushfire Catastrophe of the 2019 Summer when smoke made even city dwellers housebound Gretel organised prints of some of her photographs and began by painting them. In March 2020 when print access was no longer available ​due to Australia's first COVID 19 lockdown, she moved on to paint on paper and corflute.
